MODIFIED CPP EXAM SPECIFICATIONS
The CPP examination specifications have been modified as a result of a world-wide analysis of security management jobs conducted by the Professional Certification Board (PCB) earlier in 2004. The specifications will be reflected in new exams that will be administered beginning July 1, 2005. The new domains are explained HERE.
The results of the job analysis can be summarized as:
- the Security Management domain is now divided into Security Principles and Practices and Business Principles and Practices;
- the domain formerly known as Protection of Sensitive Information is now Information Security, with a broader range of coverage;
- new tasks and knowledge statements appear in almost every domain, reflecting the new security environment.
It is important to note that it is in the tasks and knowledge area requirements that issues such as terrorism and technology developments are addressed. For instance, new methods of identifying people on a "watch" list could be asked in questions appearing under Personnel Security, Information Security or even Emergency Management.
New exam questions have been written to reflect the updated job analysis; and the official reference list contains new editions of two books, a revision of the Canadian law resource, and a new book on information security management.
The new domains include:
Domain 1 - Security Principles and Practices (22.8%) Domain 2 - Business Principles and Practices (11%) Domain 3 - Personnel Security (9.9%) Domain 4 - Physical Security (24.4%) Domain 5 - Information Security (5.5%) Domain 6 - Emergency Practices (8.5%) Domain 7 - Investigations (12.4%) Domain 8 - Legal Aspects (5.3%)
EXAM QUESTION SOURCES (2008 AND BEYOND)
New and updated chapters in the Protection of Assets Manual (POA) have enabled the elimination of two reference books from the CPP list – Managing Today! and Risk Analysis and the Security Survey (The information contained in these publications is now covered in the POA). In addition, two existing references have new editions – Management of Information Security and Security and Loss Prevention: An Introduction.
Note: References for the United Kingdom and Canada are unchanged.

PRINCIPLES FOR EXAM PREPARATION
There are a few principles about the exam that need to be stated, even if they appear obvious to some:
- The exam covers several different subject areas.
- The percentage of questions in each subject area on the exam is as published by ASIS, e.g., 24.4% of the questions are on physical security.
- All exam questions come from the books on the reference list.
- There are no questions on the exam from other references.
- Questions are taken from all reference books.
- All questions are multiple choice.
- There is no penalty for guessing, i.e., only the number of correct answers is tabulated.
- There are no questions written with the intention of being "tricky."
- All questions undergo a careful, systematic review by a team of CPPs for content, and by a professional testing service for compliance with international testing principles, before they are placed on an exam.
- The exam is not graded on a "curve." Any and all applicants who achieve the passing score pass the exam. As a result, it is theoretically possible for everyone to pass the exam or for everyone to fail the exam. There are no predetermined percentages or numbers of candidates who will pass the exam.

Non-ASIS Study Guides
These two books are not endorsed by ASIS, however you may find them helpful. The first title was published in 2006 and seems well written to me. I've never seen the second title, but it is several years old and will not reflect the revised exam content.

Purchasing Books
With some research, you may find lower prices on books from the CPP Reading List through amazon.com or other online retailers. Amazon.com often has used books available and may even offer free shipping. When ordering books through alternative sources be careful to get the correct edition (especially with used books). Some publications, like the Protection of Assets Manual, may only be available through the ASIS Bookstore.
Borrowing Books
Obviously, you could borrow materials from other local ASIS chapter members. If you don't know many of your fellow ASIS members, attend monthly chapter meetings to network and develop resources for sharing certification materials.
Another option is to borrow a book from the public library. As you might guess, the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County does not own any ASIS certification study materials. However, through their interlibrary loan program anyone with a library card can request books from other libraries throughout the country. A library card is free if you live in Mecklenburg County and interlibrary loans are typically free (limit: one per week). If you live in another county, check with your library to see if this service is offered.
A third option is to visit the UNCC library (or other schools with criminal justice programs). UNCC owns some of the books necessary to study for ASIS certifications, but I'm not sure of the cost to join this library. If you've got a child or friend who attends the school, maybe they can check out the book for you.
Lastly, most of the items from the CPP, PCI, and PSP Reading Lists are available for loan from the ASIS Information Resources Center to ASIS members, with the following options:
- Up to 3 titles at a time may be borrowed for three (3) weeks. Members pay shipping both ways, either with their Fedex account or their credit card. View IRC Lending Policy.
- Rental of the complete package (excluding the POA Manual and US/British legal resources) for a 90-day period. Members also pay shipping both ways. Contact the IRC for details on rental rates and shipping charges.
Note: You'll need an ASIS password to visit the IRC links above.
RECERTIFICATION CHANGE FOR 2008
The Professional Certification Board (PCB) has announced that the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit will be the new standard of measure for calculating recertification credits. After extensive benchmarking and review of the various systems used by similar credentialing bodies, the PCB decided the CPE proved best suited to the ASIS International certification programs. The CPE recertification system will go into effect January 1, 2008 for all designations – Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Professional Certified Investigator (PCI), and Physical Security Professional (PSP).
Visit the ASIS website for more details. An online PowerPoint presentation regarding the implementation of the new Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit recertification system is also available HERE.
